Camping Weekends!

Summary: Experience Natural Sarasota County during Camping Weekends!  These select weekends listed below provide a unique outdoor experience for you, your family and friends.

Choose from the following weekends:

  • ·         March 1 – 3, 2013
  • ·         April 5 – 7, 2013

Camping Weekends! take place at three select county parks as follows:

–       T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve, Venice, FL;

–       Knight Trail Park, Nokomis, FL; and,

–       Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, North Port, FL.

Campsites vary by location and are either ‘primitive’ or ‘primitive backcountry.’  The ‘primitive’ campsites are within a short walking distance to parking, restrooms and potable water, offering a relaxing way to reconnect with nature – plan a casual day hiking and wildlife watching.  The ‘primitive backcountry’ campsites are located from 0.5 to 8 miles from parking and amenities, offering a backpacking, hiking or biking adventure into the wilderness – perfect for those seeking nature and solitude.

Campsites are $5 per person per night. Camping is by reservation and permit only. For more information, or to make a reservation, contact the Sarasota County Call Center at 941-861-5000 and let them know of your interest.

Summary: Join Sarasota County Environmental Specialist Jeff Weber as he leads participants on a nature hike from upland habitats to the shores of Shakett Creek at Pocono Trail Preserve in Nokomis. Along the way, participants will see a variety of plant and animal species including live oaks, eastern red cedars, cabbage palms, bracken ferns, osprey, wading birds and other wildlife common to the area.

Pocono Trail Preserve is one of many natural areas available through the county’s environmental lands program. The site contains forested hammocks, pine flatwoods and shoreline along Shakett Creek that provide habitat for osprey, migrating songbirds and wading birds.

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a light jacket, a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars, camera and hand lens (optional).

Directions: From the North: Take I-75 south to exit 200 (S.R. 681) toward Venice/Osprey. Merge onto U.S. 41 (south) and travel 2.2 miles to Colonia Lane. Turn left (east) onto Colonia Lane for 0.2 miles to Pocono Trail. Turn left (west) onto Pocono Trail and proceed past Bittner Boulevard and parallel park anywhere along the road shoulder alongside the wood mortise fence.

From the South: Take I-75 north to exit 195 (Laurel Road) and travel west toward U.S. 41. Turn left onto U.S. 41 and drive 1.5 miles south toward Venice. Turn left (east) onto Colonia Lane for 0.2 miles to Pocono Trail. Turn left (west) onto Pocono Trail and proceed past Bittner Boulevard and parallel park anywhere along the road shoulder alongside the wood mortise fence.

Location: Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center

Summary: Join Sarasota County Park Naturalist and volunteers in a sunrise birding adventure that will lead participants to Englewood’s Lemon Bay Park through pine and scrubby flatwoods with wonderful views of Lemon Bay during your hike. Along the way you may encounter native plants and animals and a variety of shore birds such as anhinga and snowy egret and a variety of birds of prey like bald eagle and osprey all in their natural surroundings.

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a light jacket, a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars and bird identification book are recommended, as well as a camera (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.

Directions:  Take I -75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Boulevard), turn toward CR 765/Englewood/Venice, and traveling south 5.3 miles to Englewood Road (SR 776). Turn left on Englewood Road (SR 776) (4.1 miles), turning right onto Old Englewood Road (1.5 mile), turn right onto Stewart Street, then stay on Stewart Street until you reach the park entrance on the left. Please meet at the amphitheater just north of the main building.

Summary: Would you believe there are over 50 species of dragonflies and damselflies that call Sarasota County home? Join Kathy and Don Hess, amateur odonatists, to learn more about these fascinating creatures and enjoy their vibrant colors and amazing flight skills!

Deer Prairie Creek Preserve, a 6,439-acre preserve along the wild and scenic Myakka River, was purchased through a partnership between Sarasota County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program and the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The preserve is one of many public preserves that have been made available to the public through the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program.

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes fit for a possible muddy trail; bring a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (Short focal length recommended), and camera with a zoom lens (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.

Directions: Take I-75 to Exit 191 toward US-41 / State College of Florida-Venice / North Port / Englewood / Gulf Beaches. Merge onto North River Road. Drive 5 ½ miles to Tamiami Trail South / US-41 S / FL-45 S, turn left on US-41. Drive 1.2 miles to turn around road. Make a u-turn here. You will see the sign and gate on your right at 10201 Tamiami Trail S, Venice. You may drive through this gate approximately 1 mile to the large parking lot near the lake.

Summary: Calling all F.I.S.H. – Folks Interested in Submerged Habitats!  Get a little wet, have a little fun and learn a lot! Join American Littoral Society Biologist Chuck Idelberger on a search for marine life in Lemon Bay. Using hand and seine nets, you will search shallow waters and sea grass beds, observing, collecting, and discussing the natural history of some of the many interesting fishes and other animals that inhabit Lemon Bay.

Participants should meet at the park amphitheater, north of the main building near the canoe launch.  Wear wading type shoes, a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, and bring a towel and drinking water. Prepare to get wet and muddy!

Directions:  Take I -75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Boulevard), turn toward CR 765/Englewood/Venice, and traveling south 5.3 miles to Englewood Road (SR 776). Turn left on Englewood Road (SR 776) (4.1 miles), turning right onto Old Englewood Road (1.5 mile), turn right onto Stewart Street, then stay on Stewart Street until you reach the park entrance on the left.

Location: T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve)

Summary: Join SCORR (Sarasota County Off-Road Riders) members along with Sarasota County volunteer guides for a challenging bike excursion while enjoying the wild wilderness of a true Sarasota County gem, the beautiful T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve) for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

Participants should bring their own bicycle suitable for off road riding – wide tires (Mountain bikes preferred, but not required); wear clothing applicable to riding bicycle on bumpy trails through the woods; wear closed-toed shoes; bring plenty of drinking water, sunscreen, insect repellant, sun glasses, and helmet (required for all participants). All Sarasota County nature events prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.

This event is for adults and children 12 years or older along with an accompanying parent(s) or guardian(s). Routes may vary due to trail conditions and participants level of experience. Be prepared that some trails may have unexpected feral hog damage making trails quite rough.

Directions: Take I-75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Boulevard) or from US 41, Tamiami Trail, drive north on Jacaranda Boulevard. Drive north from Exit 193 and then right at the next intersection (Border Road). Drive 2 ½ miles to the stop sign at South Moon Drive, turn left at the stop sign onto the Mabry Carlton Parkway, then turn right at the sign into the Carlton Reserve’s parking entrance. Follow parking signs to the parking lot which is on the right.

Summary: Calling all birding enthusiasts! Be tantalized and wowed by the vast array of bird species and nature found at the beautiful T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton).  Join Sarasota County Volunteer Charlie Sample as he leads you on a birding nature journey. You won’t be disappointed!

Winter/Spring Birding Diversity schedule: Sunday, March 17, 2013; Saturday, April 6, 2013; Saturday, May 4, 2013; Friday, June 14, 2013.

Space for this event is very limited (14) and reservations are necessary. The birding outing consists of a short walk around the Park area followed by a carpool trek into the Carlton backcountry with stops along the way to locate birds.

Please note: Registration is for the entire event – no early departures because of the distance traveled.

It is suggested that participants wear comfortable sturdy walking shoes (that can possibly get wet), hat or visor, sun screen, insect repellent, plenty of drinking water, and binoculars (a must!), field bird guide, camera and snack (optional).

Cancellations: Please notify the guide that you are canceling as soon as possible at 941-468-1231. The event is for beginning birders to expert; however, young children under 12 are not encouraged because of the distance covered.

Summary: Learn the techniques utilized by early settlers of Florida for harvesting native plants as food and for treatment of illness and injuries.

A graduate of USF, Ms. Post is Extension Agent and coordinator for the Florida-Friendly Landscaping program at UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension.

Location: Sleeping Turtles Preserve North

Summary: During this two-hour hike, Denny and Al will share their boundless knowledge of botany, not just identification, but lore of the plants as well. Experience the meandering trails while learning about the natural lands and the plants they support.

This preserve is one of many that are available to the public through the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. In addition to the numerous subtropical plants, visitors may observe eagles or osprey hunting over the river corridor.

Participants may bring binoculars, sun screen, drinking water and camera (optional), wear weather-appropriate clothes and a jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and a hat.

Directions:  Take I -75 to exit 193 and turn right. From southbound I-75 take exit 193 and turn left. Proceed north 1/2 mile on Jacaranda Blvd. to the stop sign and turn right onto Border Road. Proceed approximately 3 miles east on Border Road to the bridge over the Myakka River. As you approach the bridge, the Sleeping Turtles Preserve parking lot will be on the left (north side), immediately before the bridge. The walk will take place on the south side of Border Road.

Summary: Join Sarasota County Parks Naturalist for a threatened species nature walk through coastal scrub. Guests will learn about scrub habitat, Florida’s threatened and endangered species, and have potential opportunities to see the resident Florida scrub jays and gopher tortoises, both listed threatened species.

Shamrock Park contains some of the last remaining scrub habitat in the coastal area of Sarasota County and supports populations of Florida scrub jay and gopher tortoise.

Participants should wear appropriate shoes for walking on both paved and sandy trails. Recommended items to bring are camera, binoculars, drinking water, insect repellent, and sun protection.

Family Bike Adventures at the Beautiful Carlton Reserve

Summary: Got bikes? It’s perfect weather to grab the whole family to join Sarasota County and Carlton Reserve volunteer David Reynolds and family for an off road wilderness bicycle ride through the beautiful T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve) for approximately 1 to 2 hours. Expect to see lots of wildlife!

Summary: Join Sarasota County Environmental Specialist, Jeff Weber, as he introduces participants to a wide variety of plants, animals and habitats as they take a leisurely stroll along 1.5 miles of trails that wind through the preserve.

Curry Creek Preserve is one of many natural areas available through the county’s environmental lands program. In addition to a wide variety of native plant species, the preserve also provides habitat for gopher tortoises, bobcats and a diverse assortment of bird species.

Participants should wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, and bring a light jacket, a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars, camera and hand lens (optional).

Directions: Pinebrook Road EAST entrance Take I -75 to Exit 195 (Laurel Road). Go west on Laurel Road for approximately 0.3 miles and turn left at the traffic light onto Pinebrook Road heading south. Go 1.5 miles passing the traffic light at Edmondson Road and look for the preserve sign on the right. Slightly before you get to the preserve sign, turn right into the driveway directly across from Water Street and then bear left onto preserve property. Park on the grass to the south of the preserve sign and entrance. Participants will gather for the walk at the cable gate entrance.

Summary: Join Sarasota County Parks Naturalist for a nature walk along the trails at Phillippi Estate Park. We will stroll along the shoreline then venture into the coastal hammock to learn about mangroves, epiphytes and the effects of exotic plants on native ecosystems.

Meet at the trailhead in the northeast corner of the Edson Keith Mansion parking lot.

Phillippi Estate Park is a scenic, 60-acre natural area park located south of downtown Sarasota on the shores of Phillippi Creek. The park features environmental and historic attractions including the historic Edson Keith Mansion and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Participants should wear appropriate shoes for walking on both paved and sandy trails. Recommended items to bring are camera, binoculars, drinking water, insect repellent, and sun protection. All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.

‘Viva Florida Scrub-jay!’ at South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve

Location: South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve

Summary: The search is on! Join Environmental Specialist Nancy Edmondson on a quest for the sometimes elusive, sometimes social Florida Scrub-jay. While searching you may encounter native plants such as Chapman oaks, and paintbrush wildflowers. Sightings of White Pelican and Great Blue Heron fishing in the wetlands are possible. You may even spot nesting Bald Eagles and Ospreys, all in their natural habitat. During the event you will pass through pine and scrubby flatwoods bordering Lemon Bay. If you can’t make this event, a repeat Florida Scrub-jay nature event will occur on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at this same location.

This event is part of ‘Viva Florida 500,’ a year-long commemoration of Florida’s diverse cultural history from 1513 through 2013. The native Paleo-Indians and Florida Scrub-jays were some of the original inhabitants of Florida, long before Europeans began searching for the ‘Fountain of Youth’ in the 16th century. Viva Florida 500 is a significant milestone celebrating our state’s rich heritage. The South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve is one of many lands protected by and available to the public through Sarasota County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. The preserve recently completed a successful hydrologic and habitat restoration to enhance prospects for the many species of wildlife that call the preserve home.

Participants may bring binoculars, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water and camera (optional); wear comfortable walking shoes for sandy soil and a hat.

Directions: Take I-75 Exit 193 (Jacaranda Blvd.). At the end of the exit ramp, turn south onto Jacaranda Boulevard and drive approximately 5.2 miles. At the “T” intersection of Jacaranda Blvd. and Englewood Road (State Road 776), turn left (south).  Drive approximately 1.5 miles and turn west on to Manasota Beach Road. Summary: “Looking for an alternative to the typical playground?” Then bring your school age child to connect with nature in fun, creative ways at Sarasota County Government’s nature program, The Little Naturalist.

The Little Naturalist, for children ages 5 – 10, is from 10:00 – 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Rothenbach Park in Sarasota. This program includes a short guided nature walk, a variety of hands-on nature themed activities, a snack and story. All participating children must be registered and accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Rothenbach Park is a true community park offering many opportunities for recreational and nature based fun. Its amenities feature paved and unpaved trails, a playground, picnic facilities, and some of the most advanced recycling and sustainable building techniques and materials available. Rothenbach Park is also home to the FPL solar array which provides electrical power to the FPL grid. In fact, the entire site is a closed and capped landfill which has been “recycled” into open vistas and a beautiful public park, a prime example of turning trash into treasure.

Participants should wear comfortable weather-appropriate clothes, a jacket, walking shoes that can get wet (no flip-flops!), and bring a hat, sun screen, drinking water and camera (optional). Please do not register YOUR name. Instead register separately each participating child’s first and last name. Please also include the child’s age in the NOTES section of the registration form! The program minimum is 5 children. Space for this walk is limited to no more than 18 children.

Directions: Take I -75 to Exit 207 (Bee Ridge Road). Drive east, approximately 3 miles, on Bee Ridge Road. Enter the park and stay to the right. Drive through the electric gates and park in the designated spaces adjacent to the picnic pavilion.

Summary: During this two-hour walk, Al and Denny will engage participants in lively discussions about the botany found along Curry Creek.  Hikers will pass through flatwoods, oak scrub and other habitats found on site.

Curry Creek Preserve is one of many natural areas available through the county’s environmental lands program. In addition to a wide variety of native plant species, the preserve also provides habitat for gopher tortoises, bobcats and a wide variety of bird species.

Participants should wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, and bring a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (optional), camera and a hand lens or magnifying glass (optional).

Directions: Pinebrook Road EAST entrance Take I -75 to Exit 195 (Laurel Road). Go west on Laurel Road for approximately 0.3 miles and turn left at the traffic light onto Pinebrook Road heading south. Go 1.5 miles passing the traffic light at Edmondson Road and look for the preserve sign on the right. Slightly before you get to the preserve sign, turn right into the driveway directly across from Water Street and then bear left onto preserve property. Park on the grass to the south of the preserve sign and entrance. Participants will gather for the walk at the cable gate entrance

Summary: Join Sarasota County Environmental Specialist, Jeff Weber, as he leads participants on a guided walk through Pocono Trail Preserve in Nokomis. Stroll through shady oak hammocks to the south shore of Shakett Creek, once the site of the historic Pollyanna Inn. Learn about some of the earliest inhabitants from the Paleo-Indian Period and Manasota Culture who once inhabited the area and early pioneers instrumental in the development of Nokomis and Venice.

This event is part of ‘Viva Florida 500,’ a year-long commemoration of Florida’s diverse cultural history from 1513 through 2013. The native Paleo-Indians and Florida Scrub-jays were some of the original inhabitants of Florida, long before Europeans began searching for the ‘Fountain of Youth’ in the 16th century. Viva Florida 500 is a significant milestone celebrating our state’s rich heritage. Pocono Trail Preserve is one of many natural areas available through the county’s environmental lands program. The site contains forested hammocks, pine flatwoods and shoreline along Shakett Creek that provide habitat for osprey, migrating songbirds and wading birds.

Directions: From the North: Take I-75 south to exit 200 (S.R. 681) toward Venice/Osprey. Merge onto U.S. 41 (south) and travel 2.2 miles to Colonia Lane. Turn left (east) onto Colonia Lane for 0.2 miles to Pocono Trail. Turn left (west) onto Pocono Trail and proceed past Bittner Boulevard and parallel park anywhere along the road shoulder alongside the wood mortise fence.

From the South: Take I-75 north to exit 195 (Laurel Road) and travel west toward U.S. 41. Turn left onto U.S. 41 and drive 1.5 miles south toward Venice. Turn left (east) onto Colonia Lane for 0.2 miles to Pocono Trail. Turn left (west) onto Pocono Trail and proceed past Bittner Boulevard and parallel park anywhere along the road shoulder alongside the wood mortise fence.

Summary: Nature walk from the Gulf shore to a lagoon off Lemon Bay led by ecologist Bruce Dayton at Blind Pass Beach. We discuss how water, wind, sand and living things interact to create our beautiful barrier islands (keys as we call them). The biological emphasis will be on habitats which include: beaches, dunes, coastal hammocks and mangroves. It is a fairly easy two hour stroll on beach, boardwalk, and a short trail. We will meet at 9 am by the Blind Pass sign across from the parking area. Registration is required and is limited to 15 participants. Summary: Sarasota’s only weekday farmers market is back for its 4th season at Phillippi Estate Park at 5500 South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. The Phillippi Farmhouse Market takes place every Wednesday from October through May from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. This outdoor market features locally grown fruits and vegetables, including local USDA certified organic produce and hydroponics. There will be plants, herbs, hanging baskets, shrubs and cut flowers for sale along with a wide variety of locally baked goods, delicious barbeque, plenty of food and beverage vendors, arts and crafts, soaps and candles and always live music.

The market hosts a Welcome Tent with plenty of information about what’s happening in the greater Sarasota area. Well-behaved dogs are always welcome in this dog-friendly park. There will be market raffles with gift certificates and product give-aways and the market’s new, recyclable market bags. There is ample free parking and handicap accessibility. Tuesday,February 5 As a part of the Annual Lemon Bay Festival’s theme of “Environment & History”, join Erin Mahaney, Archivist at the Arthur Vining Davis Library at Mote Marine Laboratory, and Linda Roberts, Historian at Charlotte County Historical Center, for presentations on Englewood’s Bass Biological Laboratory which in the 1930’s welcomed scientists from around the world to study local marine species.  A part of the Bass Lab known as the “Cookie House”, which resides at Cedar Point today, will be open to the public after the presentations.  Free.  Lectures begin at 10:30 am.

Friday,February 15 Join John Phillips on a guided walk through Tippecanoe II Mitigation Preserve in Port Charlotte. This 150 acre preserve is home to several families of the threatened Florida scrub jay. Meet in the parking lot.
Saturday, February 16 Join Dave Clayton on a guided walk through Buck Creek Preserve.  This 80-acre preserve is comprised of scrubby and mesic flatwoods that transition into coastal hammock and mangrove swamp along Buck Creek. Meet at the parking lot.
Sunday,February 17 Join Barb Seibel on a guided walk through Cedar Point Environmental Park in Englewood.  Situated on Lemon Bay, this 115-acre park is home to nesting bald eagles as well as other flora and fauna.  Meet at the Visitor Center.
Tuesday,February 19 Join CHEC on a guided walk through the scrub and pine flatwoods of 217-acre Amberjack Environmental Park in Cape Haze. Meet in the parking lot at the end of Gasparilla Pines Blvd.
